Background

Polystyrene is widely used in packaging, insulation, and disposable items due to its lightweight and cushioning properties. It is classified as Class 6 plastic and is non-biodegradable, polluting the environment when discarded in landfills or incinerated.

In Ladakh, the fate of polystyrene waste is unclear. While it is collected in municipal trucks, what happens to it thereafter is not certain. Being fragile, polystyrene breaks and gets contaminated when mixed with the general stream of municipal waste, making recovery a challenging task. Further, it is not economically viable to transport recovered polystyrene waste to recyclers outside Ladakh, as it is a lightweight and voluminous material and is likely to fetch marginal revenue. These factors disincentives proper management of polystyrene waste, and it may ultimately be burnt or dumped in the open. Once dumped, polystyrene can easily be carried away by wind, further polluting the environment.

Polystyrene is a 100% recyclable form of plastic. It can be converted into intermediate products such as ingots and pellets, which can be used to manufacture items like photo frames and wall panels. It can also be repurposed and reused—for instance, as insulation boards due to its thermal non-conducting properties.

Objective

Our Thermocol Recycling Programme aims to create circularity in the polystyrene value chain by collecting polystyrene waste at source, recycling it locally, and supplying the recycled material to product manufacturers. This initiative was started with CSR support from Supreme Petrochem Limited (SPL), a global supplier of styrenics. The overall objective of the programme is to reduce plastic pollution and close the loop in the plastic supply chain in the Himalayan region.

Activities

  • We identify and map local shops and commercial units that are key polystyrene waste generators, along with wholesale suppliers who qualify as bulk waste generators of polystyrene waste. They are made aware of the programme and their role in storing polystyrene waste instead of disposing of it through municipal trucks. Upon their consent, they are enrolled into our collection mechanism.

  • Waste collection is carried out on an on-call basis, whenever a unit has sufficient polystyrene for pickup. The collected polystyrene is brought to our Collection Centre in Leh. We also accept drop-offs with prior scheduling.

  • In addition, we conduct waste education and awareness activities in schools, institutions, villages, and urban areas to educate the public on the environmental and health impacts of waste, source segregation, the policy framework for Solid Waste Management, waste minimisation, and recycling.

Impact

Since the start of the project in 2025, we have established Ladakh’s first Polystyrene Collection Centre in Leh; enrolled 40+ key polystyrene waste generators; collected over 2 metric tonnes of polystyrene waste as feedstock for local recycling; conducted over 10 waste education and awareness activities, engaging 520+ individuals; hosted our partners for a field visit to Ladakh; visited a recycling facility in Delhi to prepare for setting up a similar unit in Ladakh; and secured municipal support for collecting polystyrene waste from municipal waste management facilities.

The Way Forward

  • Establish a recycling unit in Leh for polystyrene waste and channel the recycled material outside Ladakh

  • Expand the waste collection network to peri-urban areas of Leh and nearby villages

  • Set up a polystyrene collection mechanism and recycling unit in Kargil district

  • Engage more people through community education and awareness activities

  • Collaborate with other polystyrene recyclers to create value-added products

  • Explore innovative ways of reusing and repurposing polystyrene, such as in insulation and packaging
